Implants

In many cases an implant can be used to restore the space from a missing tooth. Implants are metal posts which are placed under the gums and into the bone which supported the missing tooth. The bone will attach to the implant to provide a strong foundation for a crown to be placed on top of the implant. Implants look and function like natural teeth. They can be used to support a single tooth, multiple teeth in the form of a bridge, or as additional support for a denture.

What should you expect when you are scheduled for a tooth extraction?

The area will be numbed to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction a small amount of bleeding is normal. For the first 24 hours: a soft diet is best, no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise, avoid smoking, and avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously. Ice packs may be used to control swelling. On the second day, warm salt water rinses are recommended to keep the area clean. Brushing and flossing the remaining teeth is recommended. Your dentist will give instructions for pain control.
